After so many months of silence, I have finally started my new whiskyblog:

The reason I had to re-consider how to blog about my favourite whiskies is that I got deeply involved in other things in the past one year, as well as the workload got no less then before. It is also motivated me to move on that I wanted to give something new to the whisky blogosphere. The idea I had for several years, but I was lacking the time to implement it. Up until now. So please welcome the NEW Whisk[e]y Tumbler where you can find news, releases, innovation, tasting notes in a new way ... everything which is related to the New Age of Whisk[e]y.

Sok hónapnyi hallgatás után, végre összeraktam az ígért új whiskyblogot. A hallgatás oka egyrészt az, hogy más projektek elvették az időmet, ezért valami időhatékony megoldást kellett találnom a whiskyblogoláshoz. Másik ok pedig, hogy a válság érkeztével a munka épp nem kevesebb lett a whiskyiparban, hanem több. Az új blog alapötlete már évek óta megvan, de időm nem volt kidolgozni és megvalósítani. Mostanáig. Ez a blog itt marad, de nem folytatódik. Az ÚJ Whisk[e]y Tumbler blogon megtaláltok minden újdonságot, hírt, újítást, teszteket új formában ... mindent, ami egy Új Whisk[e]y Világról szól.

Whisk[e]y blogz

It's time to write a short post about the whisk[e]y blogosphere. Not only about me, myself and I. But also about some of my fellow whisk[e]y-bloggers around the world, who did serious efforts in the past one year to promote whiskies via private blogs. It is also important, because there are only a few whisky magazines available online.
There are two of the ultimate whisky blogs: Serge's Whiskyfun and Kevin's The Scotch Blog. But there are others have been coming up in the past one year. John Hansell's 'What does John know?' started a year ago and became one of the major source of whiskynews on the web. Dr.Whisky became popular with his daily whisky-test giving more than the usual boring whisky tasting notes. Nonjatta has been just recently re-designed, and became the most comprehensive source of Japanese whiskies. Whiskygrotto has also got some facelift, and became a source of interesting whisky news from the world of whisky companies and whisky freaks.
It seems it is time to re-consider what is the aim of my whisk[e]yblog. So, now I go down into the machine room re-boot, re-set, re-design and try to suprise you with something pretty new in the world of whisk[e]y-blogging.

Itt az ideje, hogy írjak egy rövid bejegyzést a whisk[e]y-blogoszféráról. Nemcsak magamról, saját blogomról, hanem azokról a "társ" whisk[e]y-blogokról, akik különösen az elmúlt egy évben óriásit léptek előre a whiskyk népszerűsítésében. Azért is fontos ez, mert whisky magazin csak tán 2-3 érhető el online.
Van két whisky-orákulum: Serge Whiskyfun blogja és Kevintől a The Scotch Blog. Megkerülhetetlenek, ha whiskykről van szó és utánozhatatlanok, ha whiskyblogokról van szó. Feljövőben viszont egy második hullám. John Hansell "What does John know?" blogja kb egy éve indult és azóta az egyik legjobb whiskyipari információforrás lett. Dr. Whisky a szinte napi rendszerességgel kiadott whiskykóstolási eredményeinek köszönhetően vált sikeressé, mely kóstolási leírások nélkülözik a régi ún. tasting notes kliséket. A Nonjatta blog is nemrégiben újult meg és vált a japán whiskyk legátfogóbb szakértőjévé. A Whiskygrotto is átesett egy design faceliften és ontja magából a vállalatok által kiadott és mindenféle whisky-bolondságokról szóló híreket.
Úgy tűnik, annak is eljött az ideje, hogy átgondoljam mi célból és miről szeretnék írni saját whisk[e]yblogomon a jövőben. Ezért most leköltözöm a gépházba, hogy újraépítsem, átszervezzem és új designnal, új tartalommal frissítsem a blogot és hozzak új színt a whisk[e]yblogok világába.

Some whisk[e]y tasting for YachtLife Magazine

Írtam már néhány cikket a whisk[e]ykről a YachtLife című negyedévente megjelenő magyar-angol nyelvű magazinba. A cikkeket is felteszem majd ide a blogra, de előbb egy kis kedvcsináló a whisk[e]y-ajánló részből.

The Arran Malt Tokaji Finish 10 éves maláta whisky
Egy kis sziget Skócia dél-nyugati részén, amelyen egyetlen lepárló üzem működik. Az üzem bátor kezdeményezése, hogy tokaji boros hordókban való érleléssel kísérletezik. A tokaji hordónak köszönhetően ez a whisky édes, gyümölcs illatú, gazdag ízű, amelyben enyhe citrusosság enyhíti a sziruposan édes desszertbor karaktert.

Laphroaig 10 éves maláta whisky
A híres Islay szigetének egy legkedveltebb lepárló üzeme a Laphroaig. Whiskyje igen tőzeges, karakterében füstös, jódos, száraz. Csak rutinos whiskykedvelőknek ajánlott, mert aki először kóstol whiskyt életében, annak könnyen elveheti a kedvét minden további próbálkozástól.

Elijah Craig 12 éves bourbon whiskey
Az egyik legelső név a bourbon whiskeyk között. Ritkaság számba megy, hogy egy alapvetően kukoricából készített és frissen kiégetett új tölgyfahordóba töltött whiskey-t 12 évig érleljenek. A kukorica édessége és lágysága könnyen tönkretehető az új hordó csersavas, túlzottan vaníliás hatásával. Az Elijah Craig viszont éppen a határig érlelt.

The Arran Malt Tokaji Finish 10-year-old malt whisky
There is a little island at the southwestern part of Scotland with a single distillery. The innovation of the place are the experiments of maturing the whisky in casks of Tokaji wine. Due to the Tokaji cask the whisky gets fruity smell and rich flavour with a tiny citrus easing the syrupy sweet dessert wine character.

Laphroaig 10-year-old malt whisky
The most famous distillery of Islay Island is Laphroaig. Its whisky has an intensive dry character of peat, smoke and iodine. It’s advised only for real whisky drinkers, because those who taste the whisky for the first time, this type can cut the adventurous mood easily.

Elijah Craig 12-year-old bourbon whiskey
This is one of the best bourbon whiskeys. It isn’t common at all to maturate for 12 years a corn-based whiskey in freshly burned new casks. The sweet and smooth taste of corn can be easily destroyed by the tannin and vanilla character of the new cask. Elijah Craig is however matured just until the limit.

Show me the way ...

Yesterday, I have received the latest issue of the Whisky Magazine. This time there was a short leaflet attached to the magazine. The leaflet is about the best whisky bars from around the world according to the expert staff of the whisky magazine. Of course, I checked out whether is there any bar mentioned from Hungary. There is none! What a shame! There are good bars listed from Prague, Vienna, wherever from our neighbourhood, but not even a tiny little bar from Budapest. I am so much disappointed. And a wee bit upset on my fellow Hungarians who do not need a good, high-class whisky bar. I will check, visit and put together a list of the best bars with the best whisky offer in the town of Budapest.

Tegnap megérkezett a Whisky Magazin legutóbbi száma, amelyhez mellékeltek egy füzetkét a világ legjobb whisky bárjait felsorolandó. A listát gondolom a magazin szakértő állították össze vagy a whiskymag.com oldalról vették át. Természetesen első dolgom volt, hogy megnézzem van-e a listán magyarországi bár. Nos, egy sincs. Szégyen. Egy rakás szuper bárt sorolnak Prágából, Bécsből és mindenféle környező fővárosokból, de egyetlen helyet sem említenek pl. Budapestről. Nagyon csalódott vagyok és egy parányit mérges kedves honfitársaimra, akik egyáltalán nem igénylik, hogy legyen Pesten egy jó kis high-class whisky bár. Ezennel felkerekedek és körbenézek, hogy valóban ilyen rossz-e a helyzet. Hamarosan jelentkezem majd a hazai legjobb whisky bárok listájával.

Stolen whisky of Shetland

This story is unbelievable. I would not be suprised, if it happened here in our region, but it comes from the UK. Well, it seems that there are no such big differences in certain aspects as I believed. Blackwood distillery produced its very first whisky on Shetland, named Muckle Flugga. They made a blend of three 8 years old Single Malt Scotch from North-Scotland, and matured it for an extra 18 months on the Isle of Unst. The first batch was delivered to a warehouse in Hampshire, where it was waiting to be shipped to the US. Unfortunately, the stock of 360 cases of Muckle Flugga was stolen before the whiskies reached the shops. The robbers simply cut through the walls of the warehouse. The stolen batch is worth around US$60,000.

Egy hihetetlen történet. Hihető lenne, ha itt történt volna nálunk, de ez éppen Angliában esett meg. Úgy látszik nincsenek akkora különbségek Európa két széle között ebből a szempontból, mint ahogy eddig gondoltam. A Blackwood lepárló elkészítette a világ legelső Shetland whiskyjét Muckle Flugga néven. Három különböző 8 éves észak-skóciai maláta whiskyből keverték, amely blendet (a régi terminológia szerint vatted malt whiskyt) további 18 hónapig érlelték Unst-szigetén. Az első szállítmány már egy hampshire-i raktárban várta, hogy hajón Amerikába szállítsák. Sajnos azonban a raktárház falát áttörve ellopták mind a 360 karton Muckle Flugga whiskyt, mielőtt az a boltok polcaira kerülhetett volna. Az ellopott whisky értéke kb. 60.000 amerikai dollár.

Glenfiddich tribute to Michael Jackson

Glenfiddich is to introduce a new variant of its Rare Collection 40 YO Single Malt Scotch whisky. The new whisky salutes Michael Jackson whisky writer who died last summer. Michael Jackson had written tasting notes to Glenfiddich 40 YO between 2000 and 2007. Master Distiller, David Stewart selected a mix of American and European oak casks and blended them together with previous Glenfiddich 40 YO vatting. The Rare Collection 40 YO is bottled at 45.4% abv and will be available only from specialist retailers and at the Distillery for 1,000 GBP per bottle. The revenue of the the first sold bottle will be donated to the Parkinson's Disease Society which disease Michael Jackson battled against for ten years.

A Glenfiddich bejelentette, hogy elkészíti a 40 éves Rare Collection legújabb tagját. Az új 40 éves Glenfiddich azelőtt a Michael Jackson előtt tiszteleg, aki az egyik legnagyobb whisky szakíró volt és tavaly nyáron hunyt el. Michael Jackson számos 'tasting notes'-t írt az előző 40 éves Glenfiddich whiskykről 2000 és 2007 között. David Stewart, Lepárló Mester kiválasztott néhány amerikai, illetve európai tölgyfahordóban 40 éve érlelődő whiskyt, amelyet hozzákever az előző 40 éves Glenfiddich whiskykhez. A Rare Collection 40 éves 45,4% alkoholtartalommal kb. 1.000 angol fontért lehet majd kapni néhány kiemelt kereskedőnél, valamint a lepárló saját üzletében. Az első eladott 40 éves Glenfiddich Rare Collection árát a lepárló a Parkinson-kórban Szenvedők Társaságának adományozza. Ez volt a betegség, amellyel Michael Jackson küzdött csaknem 10 évig.

Aberlour 31 YO Limited Edition

Aberlour launched a very limited edition 31 years old Single Malt Scotch whisky created specifically for the French duty free exclusively. The whisky is bottled from a single cask of American oak ex-bourbon barrel (cask no. 4581) resulting only 96 bottles of Aberlour whisky. The cask was filled in 1975, and the whisky has been aged for 31 years. Those numbered bottles will only be available in Paris and Nice airports, because France is the biggest domestic market for Aberlour.

Az Aberlour piacra dobott egy 31 éves limitált szériás skót maláta whiskyt, amelyet kifejezetten a francia duty free üzletekbe szánnak. A whiskyt a 4581 sorszámú ex-bourbon whiskys amerikai tölgyfahordóból palackozták, mindösszesen 96 palackkal. A hordót 1975-ben töltötték fel, a whisky pedig 31 évig érlelődött benne. Ezeket a sorszámozott Aberlour whiskyket csak a párizsi és nizzai repterek vásárolhatjuk meg.

Join The Pact

The new phase of the Johnnie Walker's Responsible Drinking programme was unveiled in Monaco before the Monte-Carlo Formula 1 Grand Prix. Although I don't understand why would anyone be convinced of the disadvantages of drink&driving when it is communicated by two paid sportsmen (let's say celebrities), if everyone knows that they are not allowed to drink anyway. Plus, I have seen some Formula 1 drivers completely stoned, drunken, half-dead from alcohol on Grand Prix after-parties. So, please don't tell me that they are responsible. My opinion is that this whole campaign is rather about to build up a link between popular drivers and potential Johnnie Walker drinkers. Responsibility is only the cover story. As always. But maybe I am only to sceptical. Anyway, the announcement in Monaco was about The Pact. The Pact simulator is the latest tool of Johnnie Walker to promote its so-called Responsible Drinking programme. It is a futuristic pod, which will provide consumers with a practical demonstration to remind them of the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol in a controlled virtual environment. It is better to crash yourself in the virtual world and learn from it. You have several lifes in the virtual world, while only one in reality. Don't risk it! No whisky is worth it.


Monaco-ban, a Forma 1-es futam előtt mutatták be a Johnnie Walker „Felelősségteljes alkoholfogyasztás” programjának újabb elemét. Azt ugyan nem értem, hogy miért győzne meg bárkit is az ’iszol&vezetsz’ hátrányairól, ha két fizetett sportolót (vagy inkább celebritást) mutogatnak ezzel kapcsolatban, amikor mindenki tudja, hogy ők amúgy sem ihatnak. Másrészt pedig láttam én már teljesen részeg, szétcsapott, alkoholtól önkívületben ténfergő Forma 1-es versenyzőt Nagydíj afterparty-n. Ne mondja senki, hogy akkor éppen nem kellett felelősségteljesen italoznia. Véleményem szerint ez az egész kampány arról szól, hogyan lehet a Johnnie Walker márkanevet okosan a Forma 1-hez kötni. A „felelősség” csak a fedőtörténet. Mint mindig. De lehet, hogy csak túl szkeptikus vagyok. Na de miről is szól a The Pact. Ez egy olyan futurisztikus szimulátor, ami vitruális környezetben próbálja valósághűen bemutatni és az ittas vezetés következményeire emlékeztetni a fogyasztókat. Még mindig jobb, ha a virtuális térben ér baleset, mintha azt az egy életünket kockáztatjuk a valóságban. Annyit egy whisky sem ér.

Ever heard of a Tokaji Cask Finish?

Have you ever tasted a Tokaji Cask Finish whisky? No? And have you ever tasted Tokaji wine? This is a special late harvest wine from the North-Eastern region of Hungary, called Tokaj. „Vinum Regum, Rex Vinorum” as we say it in Hungary, which means: The wine of Kings, the King of the wines. And it really is! There are even 3 distilleries which found it a good idea to put there Single Malt Scotch whiskies into ex-Tokaji wine casks for a couple of years: Isle of Arran, Benromach, Edradour. I heard once from Edradour that after one and a half year they had to take the whisky out of the Tokaji barrels as the wine itself is so characteristic and had so much influence in such a short time, that ageing longer in Tokaji wine casks might have ruined the whisky. As the Tokaji wine itself is very sweet, a wee bit spicy, but full of aromas of sundried fruits, the casks transfers these aromas into the whisky, too. So grab a bottle of a Tokaji Cask Finish next time you are in a whisky store, and taste it! (The very same post you can find on forscotchlovers.com, too.)

Próbálta már a Tokaji Cask Finish whiskyt? Nem? De tokaji aszút ivott már, ugye? „Vinum Regnum, Rex Vinorum” vagyis a „Királyok bora, a borok királya”. De ezt mindenki tudja. Három maláta whisky lepárló van Skóciában, akik fantáziát láttak whiskyjük tokaji boros hordóban történő utóérlelésére: az Arran, a Benromach és az Edradour. Az Edradour embereitől hallottam egyszer, hogy másfél év után ki kellett venni a whiskyt a tokajis hordókból, mert az aszú olyan karakteres és olyan hatással volt a whiskyre, hogy minden további nap csak rontott volna a whisky aromáján. Mivel a tokaji aszú igen édes, kissé fűszeres, aszalt gyümölcsös aromákkal, ezek a jellemzők a hordón keresztül átkerülnek a whiskybe is. Szóval csak jóra számítsunk. Egy próbát megér. Ever heard of a Cognac Cask Finish?

Traditionally, Scotch whisky was matured either in Bourbon casks or Sherry casks. Couple of decades ago, some marketing guru might have advised to leading Single Malt distilleries to use Bourbon casks for the first period of the maturation, then Sherry casks for the last couple of years … then label the whisky as Sherry Cask Finish. To be honest, I don’t know who was the very first to play this card, but did it right. Since then distilleries marketed several variations of cask finish whiskies: Port wood finish, Madeira wood finish, Burgundy wood finish.

Have you ever tasted a Cognac Cask Finish whisky? No? No wonder, because Cognac is hardly available for cask finishes. The reason is simple. Cognac itself is a trademark. Therefore Cognac producers do not intend to let anyone else to use and place the word ’Cognac’ on any bottle of spirits, except real Cognac from the French region of Cognac. So, even if any of the Scottish distilleries tried to finish its Scotch Malt whisky in ex-Cognac casks, they need to be tricky to be allowed to place the word "Cognac" onto their whisky label. Isle of Arran does many variations of cask finish whiskies. The way they do it is that they set a deal with Hardy Cognac, USA.

A skót whiskyt hagyományosan bourbon whiskys vagy sherrys hordókban érlelték. Jó pár évtizeddel ezelőtt valami okos marketinges tanácsolhatta valamelyik vezető maláta whisky lepárlónak, hogy használja az érlelés első periódusában csak a bourbon hordókat, majd tegye át pár évre whiskyjét a sherrys hordókba, ezek után jelölje meg a whisky címkéjén, hogy „Sherry Cask Finish”. Őszintén szólva fogalmam sincs melyik lepárló volt a legelső, de jól tette, amit tett. Azóta számtalan cask finish whisky variációval találkozhattunk: portói bor, madeira bor, burgundy bor finish.
De hallott már valaki Cognac Cask Finish whiskyről? Nem? Nem csoda, hiszen a cognac-os hordók nehezen megszerezhetők utóérlelésre. Az ok egyszerű. A Cognac egy védjegy, amit a franciák nagyon óvnak. Nem hagyják bárkinek (és főleg nem a konkurenciának), hogy akármikor ellenőrizetlenül használja. Csak a francia cognac régióból származó valódi cognac címkéin tűntethető fel. Elméletileg. Szóval, ha egy whisky lepárló kis is próbálja milyen lehet whiskyje Cognac hordókban történő utóérlelés után, nem feltétlenül írhatja a címkére, hogy „Cognac Cask Finish”. Persze van erre is megoldás. Az Isle of Arran sok finisht kipróbált már, miért pont ezt hagyná ki. Az ő trükkje, hogy megállapodást kötött az amerikai Hardy Cognac nevű céggel, így használhatja a Napoleon Cognac Cask Finish elnevezést.
